EKU Alum Shelby Howell to Chair 2017 BASE Camp
EKU Accounting was well represented at this year's BASE Camp - and not only through their Gold Level sponsorship. Alum Shelby Howell brought closing remarks at the awards ceremony and will serve as next year's BASE Camp chair.

BASE camp, or Business & Accounting Summer Education, is sponsored by the Kentucky Society of CPAs for high school juniors and seniors. Students gathered at Bellarmine University June 12-16 to explore career options in business and accounting. Students stay on campus, meet successful business leaders, enjoy social activities, learn about networking and team building, and even toured Papa John's International headquarters and the offices of top CPA firms.
According to Howell, " While I was a student at EKU, my accounting professors stressed the importance of getting involved and networking as early as possible. I took this advice to heart, and joined the KyCPA as a student member which is free as a student. After joining I learned that students are eligible to serve on any of the KyCPA committees or Task Forces. This is exactly how to get involved and have those essential networking opportunities as a student!
Unable to attend BASE Camp as a high schooler, Howell said, "I joined the BASE Camp Task Force right away. I served on the committee as a Member at Large my first year while still a student." The next two years brought leadership roles and even more responsibilities. She is currently the Chair of the entire Camp for the 2017 BASE Camp. "If I hadn't gotten involved so early as a student due to recommendation from the faculty I would not be Chair right now and had these opportunities. This is why it is so important to get involved as early as possible. While serving on the committee I have met numerous individuals from various industries to add to my network which is priceless."
Howell goes on to speak fondly of her time at Eastern. "EKU gave me every single tool I needed to be successful in my accounting career. All of the building blocks I needed I gained from my time at Eastern - from the materials learned throughout the curriculum, to leadership skills from being involved in the Accounting Society, to interpersonal skills needed for networking and interviews, to CPA studying skills from being involved in PEAK and so much more. My time at Eastern got me the job I wanted in Audit at Crowe Horwath, but more importantly the curriculum helped prepare me for the CPA exam. Obtaining my license is the accomplishment that I am most proud of to date and EKU played a huge role in my success in obtaining the certification."
During her academic career, Howell was named the 2014 Distinguished Senior for the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems. She was also awarded the College of Business and Technology Dean's Distinguished Academic Achievement Award for 2014, an award given periodically to an outstanding graduating student who excelled in more than one major within the College. Howell earned her BBA in both Accounting and Finance in May 2014.
Beyond BASE Camp, Howell intends to stay involved. "I will definitely continue to serve on the BASE Camp Task Force and stay involved with the camp because I think the information that the high schoolers receive at camp is invaluable. I also hope to be at EKU in the future to potentially talk to students about my experiences since graduation. And, who knows, maybe I will be back in the near future to obtain a master’s degree."
