Five Eastern Kentucky University accounting students brought home the first place trophy from this year's statewide PEAK competition on April 26.  Held in Louisville by the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants, the jeopardy-style event is designed to Promote and Encourage Accounting in Kentucky (PEAK). Becker CPA Exam Review co-hosted the event with the KYCPA.

Advised by EKU accounting assistant professor Dr. MaryBeth Holbrook, the 2014 PEAK team (pictured above) included Jacob Carberry (Franklin, Oh.), Andrew Hicks (Junction City), Shelby Howell (Berea), Brian Overall (Waco), and Sam Shearer (Winchester). EKU alum and MBA student, Brittany Neaves (not pictured), was the team's assistant advisor.

"Year after year, the students who participate in PEAK are motivated, bright, and well on their way to successful careers," said Dr. Holbrook. "Our performance on Friday pays tribute to the strong accounting program we have at Eastern Kentucky University and the outstanding students EKU serves. It was a great day for EKU Accounting!"

According to Neaves, "I am proud to say that EKU won the PEAK competition! After placing second the past three years, the victory is even sweeter."

The PEAK competition was held in conjunction with the KYCPA spring banquet, where the Kentucky Society Educational Foundation awards scholarships in amounts from $1,000 to $2,500 to outstanding accounting students across the state. KYCPA scholarship recipients included Brittany Neaves (Mt. Sterling) and Sam Shearer.

Two EKU alums also received their CPA certificates - Jamie (Gregory) Cope and Charles Tolliver.

“EKU accounting graduates are highly sought after by both employers and graduate schools,” said Dr. Oliver Feltus, chair of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems. “Winning the PEAK competition is further proof that our students can compete successfully with the best students from other Kentucky institutions.”
