EKU Accounting Program Hosts 'Meet the Firms' night

On Wednesday, September 21, 2016, EKU Accounting hosted its annual 'Meet the Firms' night.  This professional networking event is held each fall; it provides a venue for students and firms to interact in a professional setting.

Accounting faculty, with help from the Accounting Society, hosted the networking event in the Business and Technology Center Janna P. Vice Atrium from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Twenty-five EKU accounting majors and accounting certificate students took advantage of the opportunity to network with professionals and seek internship and permanent employment opportunities.

Regional firms, both large and small, from Lexington, Richmond, Danville, and London were actively recruiting for full-time spring internships. Participating firms and organizations included:

  • Auditor of Public Accounts
  • Baldwin CPA's
  • Bankers Service Corp
  • Blue & Co.
  • Breeding Henderson and Hord
  • EKU Career and Co-op Office
  • Christian Sturgeon & Associates
  • Crowe Horwath
  • Dean Dorton Allen Ford
  • Institute of Management Accountants
  • Jackson Hewitt
  • Kentucky Society of CPAs
  • Liberty Tax Service
  • Mountjoy (MCM)
  • Robert Half
  • Robinson Hughes & Christopher

During the event, potential employers, primarily from public accounting firms in the Central Kentucky Area, answer student questions about the accounting profession, the CPA exam, etc. Many of the firms’ representatives were EKU alumni returning to campus to reach out to current students.

This is their first professional networking event for many of our students. To help students prepare for Meet the Firms, the Accounting Society sponsored a resume workshop as well as a walk-in session for resume review and job search tips.

The annual networking event was started in 2007 with nine organizations attending. It has grown over the years. This year, 14 firms were recruiting and three organizations provided information for students – KYCPA, IMA, and EKU Office of Cooperative and Career Services.  One of the most important benefits of the event is the opportunity it provides students to meet and network with accounting professionals. Many students will be called back for interviews after submitting their resumes to recruiters. A number of our accounting students will get a paid internship in the spring, some full-time and some part-time.
