EKU Accounting Hosts Becker CPA Exam Review

On Friday, November 4, 2016, EKU Accounting hosted a CPA exam workshop. The workshop was jointly sponsored by the Kentucky Society of CPAs and Becker Professional Education. Thirty-one accounting students from EKU, Berea College, and Sullivan University participated in the workshop.

As the workshop began, participants were welcomed by Dr. Oliver Feltus, chair of EKU’s Accounting, Finance and Information Systems Department.  Special guests included:

Kentucky Society of CPAs

Penny Gold, CEO
Samantha Soutar, Member Administrator

Kentucky State Board of Accountancy

Dick Carroll, Executive Director
Phyllis Gordon, Staff Member
Mary Stevenson, Staff Member

Young CPAs

Faye Aubrey, Alltech
Dustin Rose, RFH CPAs

During the workshop, students heard from representatives from the Kentucky Society of CPAs (KYCPA), the Kentucky State Board of Accountancy, and Becker. KYCPA President Bill Jessee, along with Penny Gold, CEO, and Samantha Soutar, Membership Administrator, provided valuable information and resources for students preparing for a career in accounting. Workshop participants then heard from two young CPAs who had recently passed the exam, Faye Aubrey, CPA, with Alltech, and Dustin Rose, CPA and EKU Accounting Program alumnus, with RFH CPAs. Dick Carroll, Executive Director of the Kentucky State Board of Accountancy, along with staff members Phyllis Gordon and Mary Stevenson, told students about the process of applying to sit for the CPA exam, as well as the exam process itself. Robin Hampton Peers, with Becker, and Jonathan Eade, CPA, partner with Jones, Nale, & Mattingly and Becker instructor, described for students resources Becker offers to support their preparation for the CPA exam.

KYCPA and Becker offer this workshop two or three times during each academic year, at colleges and universities located throughout the state.  These workshops, in addition to the free pizza and great door prizes, provide a wealth of information about entry to the accounting profession and about applying and preparing for the CPA exam. More information about the workshops is available at  EKU’s workshop was coordinated by Dr. Trish Isaacs, with assistance from senior accounting student Michelle Miller.
