2016 'Meet the Firms' night date set for Sept. 21st

2013 Meet the Firms night

On Wednesday, September 21, 2016, EKU Accounting will host 'Meet the Firms' night.

Held each fall, the event provides a venue for students and firms to interact in a professional setting.

Potential employers, primarily from public accounting firms in the Central Kentucky Area, answer student questions about the accounting profession, the CPA exam, etc. Many firm representatives are EKU alumni reaching back to help current students.

Accounting faculty, with help from the Accounting Society, host the shopper-style event in the Business and Technology Center, Dr. Janna P. Vice Atrium, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. All EKU accounting majors and accounting certificate students are invited to network and seek internship and permanent employment opportunities.

Regional firms, both large and small, from Lexington, Richmond, Danville, and Somerset will be actively recruiting for full-time spring internships. According to Dr. Mary Beth Holbrook, event organizer, "The event and the internships that are obtained strengthen the relationship between EKU's School of Business and the community."

She continues, "The event was started in 2007 with nine organizations attending. It has grown over the years. In 2012, we had 13 firms recruiting and two organizations represented for informational purposes - KYCPA and EKU Office of Cooperative and Career Services."  According to Dr. Holbrook, the most important thing is that students get to meet and network with accounting professionals. Many students will be called back for interviews after submitting their resumes to recruiters. She expects that approximately 15 of our accounting students will get a paid internship in the spring, some full-time and some part-time.

Additionally, students are expected to dress in business attire and come to the event with a well-prepared resume. They get the opportunity to network with many EKU alumni in the BTC atrium, a familiar place. "For many students this is their first professional event. With the right encouragement and preparation, this event helps students build confidence in professional networking," said Holbrook.
