Accounting 'Meet the Firms' set for Sept. 20
On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, EKU Accounting will host its annual 'Meet the Firms' night. Held each fall, this professional networking event provides a venue for students and firms to interact in a professional setting.
Accounting faculty, with help from the Accounting Society, will hold the networking event in EKU's Business and Technology Center Janna P. Vice Atrium from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Open to all accounting majors and accounting certificate students, the vendor-style fair provides an opportunity to network with professionals and seek internship and permanent employment opportunities.
New this year is a panel discussion from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. in BTC 001. Designed to give students immediate access to accounting professionals before the networking event begins, the discussion will focus on questions related to job search and industry trends.
Regional firms, both large and small, from Lexington, Richmond, Danville, and London are invited to recruit for full-time spring internships. Participating firms and organizations in the past have included:
- Auditor of Public Accounts
- Baldwin CPA's
- Bankers Service Corp.
- Blue & Co.
- Breeding Henderson and Hord
- EKU Career and Co-op Office
- Christian Sturgeon & Associates
- Crowe Horwath
- Dean Dorton Allen Ford
- Institute of Management Accountants
- Jackson Hewitt
- Kentucky Society of CPAs
- Liberty Tax Service
- Mountjoy (MCM)
- Robert Half
- Robinson Hughes & Christopher
During the event, potential employers, primarily from public accounting firms in the Central Kentucky Area, answer student questions about the accounting profession, the CPA exam, etc. Many of the firms’ representatives are EKU alumni returning to campus to reach out to current students.
This is the first professional networking event for many students. To help students prepare for Meet the Firms, the Accounting Society sponsored a resume workshop for resume review and job search tips. In addition, a series of "Career & Co-op Navigation 101" workshops are being offered by CBT Outreach Coordinator Darlene Stocker. The eight-week (30 minute) workshops are designed to assist students in career preparation and navigation through the co-op process.
The annual networking event was started in 2007 with nine organizations attending. It has grown over the years to more than a dozen firms actively recruiting for open positions. Informational items are often provided by KYCPA, IMA, and EKU Office of Cooperative and Career Services.
One of the most important benefits of 'Meet the Firms' is the opportunity it provides students to meet and network with accounting professionals. Many students will be called back for interviews after submitting their resumes to recruiters. A number of EKU accounting students will receive a paid internship in the spring, some full-time and some part-time.
